Vacation House in Potia
Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh
Completion: 2018
Project Type: Office/Commercial (Competition Entry)
Area: 49,000 Sq ft
The competition proposal for the Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) in Dhaka prioritized environmentally responsible construction by adopting modular building methods that reduce on-site disruption, shorten construction time, and lower environmental impact. Steel is used as the primary structural material to minimize concrete use, supported by brick and glass, all of which are locally available and fully recyclable. This approach ensures lower cost, reduced waste, and a more sustainable construction footprint.
The design is strongly climate-responsive, with façades treated according to solar orientation. Brick screens diffuse daylight, reduce glare, and limit light pollution, while glass elements maximize natural illumination and visual connectivity. Energy-efficient systems—such as photovoltaic panels, double-layered glass, rainwater harvesting, and efficient fixtures—further enhance performance and reduce long-term environmental impact.
Social and economic benefits are central to the project. Local materials and labor support community employment and celebrate Bangladesh’s masonry heritage. Additionally, brick screening ensures privacy from future neighboring development, providing long-term adaptability.
