The proposed design for the Bangladesh National Museum and Public Library Complex aimed to create an active and engaging civic destination that bridges the city with its cultural core. As public learning spaces, the design prioritizes accessibility, interaction, and vibrant social exchange. Positioned beside Dhaka University, the project draws from a richly layered urban context that connects old and new Dhaka and surrounds the site with historically and architecturally significant landmarks.
The design concept is inspired by local morphology, cultural heritage, and traditional architectural patterns. Central to the approach is the creation of interconnected courtyards, or uthans, forming a continuous social and cultural corridor between the cultural hub and commercial areas. These interstitial spaces support informal gathering, community events, and a smooth spatial flow rooted in regional traditions.
Urban design principles—including social, functional, perceptual, and environmental dimensions—shape the master plan. Priorities include pedestrian-friendly movement, mixed-use public plazas, natural lighting and ventilation, preservation of greenery, and climate-responsive strategies that integrate water, shade, and open space.
