Vacation House in Potia
Location: Roccascalegna, Italy
Completion: 2017
Project Type: Cultural/Hospitality (Competition Entry)
The design for the resort at the base of the hill below the Roccascalegna fortress was inspired by the dramatic landscape of region, where vast mountains and an unobstructed celestial sky evoke a sense of the infinite. This setting shapes an architectural vision that views buildings as constructed landscapes—forms that belong to their environment and evolve with time. The design rejects novelty in favor of continuity, drawing from the long-standing relationship between land, sky, and human perception.
Spatial organization is guided by the natural process of erosion, carving the site to blur boundaries between ground and architecture. Extroverted and introverted spaces are intentionally arranged to support experiences ranging from communal gathering to quiet contemplation. Daylight and nighttime panoramas inform the orientation of forms, celebrating both the sweeping landscape and the vertical drama of the night sky.
Program is interpreted as ritual, emphasizing atmosphere, psychology, and lived experience. Vernacular roof forms, apertures framing the castle and stars, and locally crafted limestone construction reinforce cultural heritage while grounding the architecture in its historic context.
