Vacation House in Potia
Location: Potia, Chittagong, Bangladesh
Completion: 2015
Project Type: Residential
Area: 6,500 Sq ft
The house sits in a bucolic landscpae among tranquil ponds, greenery, and shifting light, offering retreat from the intensity of city life. It draws from the character of the land to create sanctuary and transcendence, evoking the solitude of a Bengali shrine while embracing communal gathering and celebration.
At its center, a 100-year-old tree anchors the courtyard, long a site of ritual and family gathering. Around it, shifting volumes and circulation paths protect existing trees while shaping movement through the house. Spaces unfold gradually in relation to the courtyard, offering changing experiences of light, shadow, and privacy.
Local construction methods ground the building in its physical context, while passive strategies reduce reliance on mechanical systems. More than a dwelling, the house aspires to act as a threshold between past and future, solitude and community, the human spirit and the power of the land.
